A New Beginning

HOPE
The ceiling is yellow from years of hope.
Ash in every crack on the terrazzo floor.
Between the realms, a family's daily ritual brings comfort as much as it does routine to the jingle-jangle of living.
Fresh-washed fruit on red melamine plates appease ancestors.
They smile with trepidation from dusty frames.
"Do you know what you're doing?" they seem to ask.
"It never did us any good," they offer.
Back.
But no one hears.
